OPPORTUNITY
NGP Capital is seeking an Associate to join the firm's Palo Alto office, to focus on early stage investing.
NGP operates a structured 2-3 year program that will allow candidates to work with some of the world’s best entrepreneurs across two continents, be part of a diverse and energetic investment team and be immersed in the world of startups, entrepreneurship and venture capital.
The Associate is an investment professional with two to four years of total prior work experience. The individual must have a passion for technology, products and startups, either demonstrated through choice of professional roles or by a deep involvement with the startup ecosystem.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Source new investment ideas:
- Actively network and immerse self in the Bay Area tech community, especially in enterprise
- Assist partners on thought leadership – through reading, writing and events
- Research and evaluate high potential ideas and technologies
- Propose and defend prospective breakout opportunities
- Analyze market size and segments
- Construct competitive landscapes and identify attractive investment categories
- Identify and engage domain experts for answers to specific questions
Execute due diligence on deals:
- Exhibit superior financial modeling, scenario analysis and returns modeling skills
- Perform market research
- Demonstrate ability to understand product and technology
- Deliver business plan evaluation
- Actively manage investment diligence process
- Perform company performance analysis
Assist existing portfolio companies:
- Build relationships with CEOs and executives at portfolio companies and understand their priorities
- Leverage personal skills and network to assist the company
- Broker business development relationships
- Help prepare portfolio allocation summaries, LP communications and valuation analyses
EXPERIENCE PROFILE
- Two to four years of total work experience, including:
- Early-stage investing, top tier investment banking or strategy consulting experience with strong knowledge and passion for technology
- Alternatively, operating experience at a high growth start-up company, preferably in engineering leadership, product management, product definition or a business development role.
- A “tech native”, who is deeply immersed in technology, and possesses a sophisticated, fact-based understanding of the enterprise sector and exhibits an interest in B2B business models
- Record of strong academic performance from a leading undergraduate institution, ideally with an engineering or computer science degree. Recent MBAs with prior engineering experience will also be considered.
- Preferred: the ability to successfully collaborate with a cross-border, multi-cultural partnership, through language skills, time abroad, or other international experiences

- Skilled networker with a strong existing network among Bay Area entrepreneurs, young technical talent, and startup executives; interpersonal skills that reflect well on the firm
- Technical aptitude, sound business judgment, exceptional written and verbal communication skills, entrepreneurial spirit, and a company-building orientation are all required
- Must be a critical thinker and possess rigorous analytical capabilities; must have an opinion and be unafraid to debate it respectfully
- Self-motivated and highly productive in independent work; able to envision, prioritize and thoroughly complete projects autonomously with minimal guidance
- Detail-oriented with the ability to adapt and be flexible in dynamic environments
- Strong work ethic, ability to be proactive and responsive in high-stakes situations
- Collaborative: this person will work closely with peers in the same office as well across the globe and interact closely with partners and the finance and data science teams. Should be energized by working with people and improving work through collaboration.

Preference will be given to candidates who can start as soon as possible.
