2025 Venture Fellowship

Fall 2025: Monday, July 7th – Friday, December 19th

Spring 2026: Monday, January 12th – Friday, June 26th

Company Overview

Portal Innovations is a venture capital firm investing in life sciences startups developing novel therapeutics, diagnostics, and medical devices. We provide seed stage capital, fully equipped incubator lab space, and management expertise to early-stage companies.

Fellowship Description

Fellows will work with Portal’s Venture Operations team to conduct due diligence on biotech companies entering Portal’s orbit. Over the course of the fellowship, fellows will learn Portal’s methodology for conducting due diligence by exploring the scientific, clinical, regulatory, and market context of each. Fellows will present their findings to the rest of the team during weekly meetings. Fellows will be paid for their time.

Qualifications

1.You are currently a PhD student, postdoc, MBA student, MD student, or master’s student with a life science background

2.Your university is near one of Portal’s geographies in Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, or Houston

3.You have demonstrated a previous interest in biotech and medtech startups as demonstrated through participation in groups like Nucleate, a biotechnology or consulting club, a science commercialization class, your university’s tech transfer office, work with other life science investment groups, or work with life science startups.

Expectations

  • 10 hours per week including availability during working hours for meetings
  • Investigate emerging biotechnologies using a combination of public and proprietary (e.g. GlobalData, Pitchbook) data sources
  • Clearly articulate findings, develop a perspective, and create and defend investment theses
  • Can quickly and independently come up to speed on complex scientific concepts and concisely communicate them in writing
  • Familiarity with the drug development process, FDA regulatory pathways, US healthcare landscape
  • Excellent time management skills and ability to prioritize and pivot
