Ki Tua, a New Zealand Māori name meaning to ‘go beyond’, is an early-stage investment fund supporting innovation across human health, food, agriculture, and climate.

Backed by sole-LP, the Fonterra Group - the world’s largest dairy exporter and producer of human nutrition products, Ki Tua’s mission is to compliment and extend Fonterra’s internal R&D and breakthrough innovation initiatives in driving Fonterra’s long-term innovation strategy via minority equity investments.

The fund aims to deliver value both to Fonterra and our portfolio companies by tapping into the nearly 100 years of capability, ingenuity, manufacturing and distribution experience within Fonterra and the Ki Tua team.

About the opportunity | Te whiwhinga mahi

We have an exciting opportunity for an Investor to join our Ki Tua team based in San Francisco (USA) on a permanent basis.

As part of the team, you will play a large role in shaping investment theses, deploying capital in new investments, and supporting portfolio companies.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Build networks within investor and startup ecosystems in areas the fund invests
  • Develop networks within Fonterra and gain an understanding of the company’s innovation strategy
  • Keep up to date on emerging technologies and advancements in the spaces the fund invests
  • Build a robust pipeline of opportunities for potential investment
  • Perform due diligence on potential investment opportunities
  • Structure & negotiate term sheets and work with legal counsel to finalize deal documentation
  • Prepare investment proposals and present those proposals to the fund’s Investment Committee
  • Support fund management of portfolio companies which includes supporting portfolio company management, reporting on companies’ progress towards milestones, and identify & progress opportunities for value creation between portfolio companies and Fonterra
  • Support fund reporting cadences & processes, both internally & externally
  • Drive continuous improvement on the fund operational processes
  • Represent the fund at industry events & conferences, at times holding speaking roles

About you | Ko wai koe

With a highly entrepreneurial and nimble approach, you’re able to work in an unstructured, fast-paced, and results-driven environment. You bring an ability to think analytically and compile lots of information in an organized and succinct manner.

Your knowledge of the food, agriculture or human health/nutrition space as well as knowledge of the venture capital and/or startup landscape will add to the broader knowledge base of the team and support our mission.

You’re someone who takes pride and ownership in your work, a great team player, and will be a strong culture carrier for Ki Tua and Fonterra.

Other key attributes will include:

  • Bachelors degree in a relevant field
  • 2-5 years of experience in venture capital
  • Experience in and an understanding of either the food, agriculture, or human health/nutrition spaces
  • Track record of assessing venture deals, deep science & technology, and successfully bringing through an entire deal process
  • Experience working with and supporting portfolio companies
  • Excellent networking, communication, and presentation skills
  • Strong stakeholder management skills
  • Strong cultural awareness and emotional intelligence

It would be beneficial to have:

  • A masters degree in a relevant technical field
  • Knowledge of production processes and manufacturing in the biopharma, food & ingredients and/or bio-industrial space
  • Experience holding board seats at portfolio companies (observer or director)

Please note as this opportunity is based in San Francisco, USA you must have work eligibility for United States of America to be considered. As this is a global role, travel will be required.
